Why I am Participating in Divorce with Respect Week

Participating in Divorce with Respect Week holds profound significance for me, rooted in my strong belief in the power of collaborative methods and mediation. Over the years, I’ve come to understand that the essence of a respectful divorce lies in resolving conflicts outside the courtroom—a task demanding considerable effort, energy, and professional skill.

My journey towards embracing a non-adversarial approach began around 15 years ago, while working at a law firm with a heavy emphasis on litigation. It became increasingly evident that the conventional court route was far from an ideal solution. Witnessing the transformative impact of collaborative divorce lawyers and trained mediators, I realized that adopting their skills could lead to more efficient and compassionate resolutions, ultimately safeguarding the well-being of families.

The choice to engage in the Collaborative Divorce process isn’t about seeking wildly different outcomes; rather, it’s about the way those outcomes are achieved. Whether through court battles or collaborative efforts, the result may not deviate significantly. One critical aspect that sets non-adversarial processes apart is the potential to mitigate damage to families and finances. A litigated scenario can sometimes be akin to demolishing a house with a nuclear bomb, the collateral damage extends far beyond the immediate parties involved. On the contrary, collaborative approaches are more like carefully disassembling a structure, minimizing the negative impact on the broader community.

Moreover, when children are part of the equation, choosing a collaborative path sets the stage for better co-parenting post-divorce. Effective communication is essential for successful co-parenting, and the collaborative process fosters an environment where parents are more likely to maintain a dialogue, ensuring the well-being of their children.

In essence, my commitment to Divorce with Respect Week stems from a genuine desire to see a shift in the divorce landscape—away from litigation and towards methods that prioritize respect, understanding, and the well-being of all parties involved. It’s a belief that by embracing collaborative approaches, we can build a more compassionate and sustainable foundation for families navigating the complexities of divorce.
